Upper Cold Stream Pond (aka Little Narrows): LINCOLN, ME
A Funny Story from one of my Renters
Hello Steve,
I didn't get to pass this on to you, but I figured you'd enjoy this fish story.
Understanding that there is no length/bag limit on bass on your lake, my two younger brothers came up to visit and fish on
Wednesday. We went out for the afternoon and my middle brother was having a lot of luck with your son's suggested lizard
lure.
He was in the middle of reeling in bass number five, when his pole suddenly bent in half and the reel screeched on him.
He commented something like, "My fish just gained a second wind and 20 lbs!" He pulled up hard on it and started reeling
as fast as he could. Then he screamed at me to pull the stringer in the boat. That's when the loon surfaced the first time
with my brother's bass in it's beak. My brother jerked the line a second time and pulled the fish out of the loon's beak. It
immediately dived. Brother reeled as fast as he could. The pole doubled over a second time. Again, brother jerked hard on
the pole and got what was left of the bass into the boat. The loon surfaced again, 2 feet off the stern and glared at us. It
then dived, circled under the boat and came up again, still glaring at us. It wasn't happy that my brother "stole" its dinner.
When my brother finally worked the lure out of the dead, 10 inch bass, he tossed it back in the water. The loon snapped it
up, dived, resurfaced about 50 feet further out, and swallowed it. I, honestly, didn't think loons could swallow a fish that large.
If my brother hadn't successfully pulled that bass out of that loon's beak he'd have caught a loon and we would have been in
some serious trouble. As it is, he's already telling this tale. I'm sure by next summer's scout camp, this story will have
evolved into some sort of horror tale about the killer loon. Said loon will be the size of our paddle boat and the bass will be
at least 2 ft in length. :)
Thanks again for a wonderful week. I don't know when the in-laws next plan to come-up and visit. As in the past, we'll keep
your camp in mind.
Scott
